MPG and MMF unveil new guidance on producer deals at Great Escape

The Music Producers Guild (MPG), in conjunction with the Music Managers Forum (MMF), will launch their Producer Deals Guide during the Great Escape Festival.

The guide puts the spotlight on the deals agreed between producers, artists and record labels, as well as the role of artist and producer managers in negotiating those agreements.

Written with input from members of both the MPG, MMF and experts across the industry, the Producer Deals Guide has been created to help demystify the rapidly evolving landscape of producer agreements and negotiations within the modern music industry.

The guide explores the evolving role of music producers, how producers are paid and compensated, and the key issues artists, labels and producers need to agree before starting new projects. It also examines how changing revenue models are reshaping traditional producer deals, alongside the challenges of negotiating with artists, managers, distributors and labels.

In a statement, the MPG and MMF said the resource is designed to help address misunderstandings around producer agreements and create greater transparency and understanding between all parties involved in music creation and release.

The Producer Deals Guide will be made available free of charge via the MPG website.

Producer deals have evolved dramatically over the last two decades

The guide will be officially launched on Friday (May 15) at 1pm at The H.O.M.E Hub in Brighton. Industry executives attending The Great Escape are invited to sign up and join the MPG and MMF to hear more about the thinking behind the guide, as well as how to download a free copy.

There will also be a deep dive webinar hosted by the MPG for full MPG Members in the following weeks, with a date to be confirmed.

“Producer deals have evolved dramatically over the last two decades as the music business has shifted from physical sales to streaming, and from traditional label models to artist-led distribution and services deals,” said Cameron Craig (pictured), MPG executive director. “This guide is designed to help artists, producers and managers better understand how those changes impact producer fees, royalties, neighbouring rights and credits, and to encourage clearer, fairer and more transparent conversations at the start of every project."
