CISAC appoints Grammy-winning artist Youssou N'Dour as vice president

CISAC (the International Confederation of Societies of Authors and Composers) has appointed Youssou N’Dour as vice president.

The global network representing more than five million creators worldwide has shared the news of N'Dour’s new position, effective today (June 4) as CISAC holds its annual general assembly in Paris during its 100th anniversary year.

CISAC works across more than 100 countries on behalf of the 227 rights organizations who make up its membership to protect copyright, strengthen collective management systems and ensure that songwriters, composers, audiovisual creators, writers and visual artists receive fair compensation.

Singer-songwriter N’Dour, whose career spans more than four decades, has helped shape the global perception of African music.

A Grammy award-winner for his album Egypt, N’Dour has released more than 20 albums and collaborated with artists including Peter Gabriel, Sting and Neneh Cherry. His blend of Senegalese mbalax traditions with pop, jazz and global influences has filled major venues and festivals across Africa, Europe, North America and Asia.

In addition to his international recording success, N’Dour has invested in building the commercial infrastructure of the music industry in West Africa, establishing studios, production facilities and media platforms in Dakar.

N’Dour succeeds outgoing vice presidents Yvonne Chaka Chaka and Arturo Márquez.

Gadi Oron, director general, CISAC, said: “At a moment when music creators are navigating profound technological disruption and rapid changes in how value is generated and distributed, strong and globally respected voices such as Youssou N’Dour’s are essential.

“His artistic stature and lifelong commitment to culture will help strengthen our advocacy for fair remuneration, transparency and robust copyright protections worldwide.”

N’Dour joins CISAC’s leadership alongside CISAC president and ABBA star Björn Ulvaeus, who continues to lead the organization’s global advocacy efforts on behalf of creators.
