RSA appoints former Universal executive Charlotte Thomson as first director of strategy & creative

The RSA has announced the appointment of former Universal Music UK executive Charlotte Thomson as director of strategy and creative.

In this newly created senior management role, Charlotte will steer the RSA’s strategic and creative agenda as the organisation enters an exciting new chapter under CEO David Joseph CBE. In a recent memo to the RSA Fellowship, Joseph outlined the Fellow-led approach he intends to pursue during his tenure, returning the organisation to its founding principle as a home for ideas and action.

David Joseph CBE, CEO of the RSA, said: “I have long admired Charlotte’s ability as a leader and her brilliance in translating big ideas into tangible change. Her appointment marks a significant moment for the RSA as we put creativity back at the heart of this wonderful institution.”

Thomson will be responsible for “shaping and telling” the RSA’s unique story and strengthening its brand to its Fellows and audiences across the UK and abroad. She will also “oversee the RSA’s event programming, digital platforms and communications, working across the organisation to inspire and engage the Fellowship and the wider public.”

Thomson brings extensive experience at the intersection of culture and strategy. Most recently, as head of strategy at Universal Music UK, she drove strategic change across communications, public policy, artist development, and international marketing.

Prior to this, she worked in the agency world as a strategist on large-scale behaviour change and public interest campaigns for organisations including the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office, Cancer Research UK, and the Gatsby Foundation.

Charlotte is also a Trustee of the Foundation for Future London which supports initiatives that create exciting and prosperous futures for communities across East London.

Charlotte Thomson, added, says: “At a time when it’s needed more than ever, the RSA and its brilliant Fellowship are a beacon for the magic of collaboration. A place where ideas turn into action. I’m over the moon to join the team and help bring that story to life, at the intersection of strategy, purpose and creativity.”
