Sony Corp’s Music segment has reported continued positive growth in the company’s fiscal first quarter ending June 30, 2025.
The music segment comprises Sony Music Entertainment, Sony Music Entertainment (Japan) and Sony Music Publishing.
Top sellers for the quarter were led by Bad Bunny (pictured), who had multiple projects in the major’s Top 10, as well as SZA, Sleep Token, Tate McRae, Pink Floyd, Ateez, Bruce Springsteen, Jennie and Miley Cyrus.
Total revenue and operating income for the music segment increased year-on-year by 5% in yen to 465 billion yen, driven by growth in music subscription streaming revenues across both recorded music (up 7% on a US dollar basis) and publishing (up 8%).
Physical music sales were up 11% year-on-year to 26 billion yen.
Operating income for Sony’s music segment increased 8% to 93 billion yen. Adjusted OIBDA was up 9% to 117 billion yen on increased revenue.
Recorded Music “other” revenue, comprising live, merchandise and sync revenue, was down 4% to 70 billion yen, which reflects the strong result for the category in the prior year quarter.
The forecast for the financial year has been revised upwards from May by 1% (20 billion yen) due to higher expected revenue in Recorded Music, resulting mainly from an increase in revenues from streaming services.
