The K-pop Demon Hunters soundtrack has spent a fifth week at No.1 on the UK compilations chart. It has also seen a surge in consumption, earning its biggest week to date.
This latest UK chart result comes amid huge global success for the animated Netflix movie and songs from the soundtrack.
The digital-only release added a further 14,465 chart units to its total following another week of heavy streaming with week-on-week consumption up 23.1%, according to the Official Charts Company.
Even without a physical release, K-pop Demon Hunters (Island/Republic) is rapidly approaching silver certification (60,000 units). It is currently on 48,182 chart units to date.
In the compilation chart (soundtracks are not eligible for the main artist chart), the soundtrack has already bested chart rivals including F1 – The Album and Jackboys 2 – Jackboys & Travis Scott.
In the UK singles chart, Golden by the K-pop Demon Hunters Cast (Huntr/X/Ejae/Audrey Nuna/Rei) has reached a new peak of No.5 (31,817 units – up 31.1% week-on-week).
The soundtrack also has UK Top 20 hits with Your Idol by Saja Boys, Andrew Choi, Neckwav, Danny Chung, Kevin Woo and SamUil Lee (23-14, a new peak – up 19.1% week-on-week), and a new entry at No.17 for Soda Pop by the same performers (20,459 units – up 32.8% week-on-week). A further five tracks would have made the Top 75 but for chart rules that limit entries to three from the same artist or album.
Golden has peaked at No.1 on the daily Spotify Global rankings and the weekly US Spotify rankings, as well as No.2 on the weekly Spotify Global chart. The soundtrack currently has seven entries in the weekly Spotify Global Top 30.
Republic Records has formed a joint venture with Visva Records, the new label behind the K-pop Demon Hunters soundtrack, which was founded by hitmaker Savan Kotecha.
The weekly growth for K-pop Demon Hunters is plain to see since it debuted at No.1 at the end of last month in the UK.
Chart week 26 (June 27) – 4,015 units (No.1)
Chart week 27 (July 4) – 7,871 (No.1)
Chart week 28 (July 11) – 10,079 (No.1)
Chart week 29 (July 18) – 11,751 (No.1)
Chart week 30 (July 25) – 14,465 (No.1)
The accelerating soundtrack streaming can be explained by the fact that the animated movie just reached a viewing peak in its fifth week on Netflix – the first Netflix film to achieve that result.
As reported by Music Week’s sister publication GamesRadar+, K-pop Demon Hunters was released on June 20 and debuted with 9.2 million views. But it has since been growing and pulled in 25.8 million views for the week of July 14 to July 20, according to Netflix’s own data.
During Netflix’s Q2 earnings call, co-CEO, president & director Ted Sarandos noted “just how successful the music has been and continues to be, and we think that will drive fandom for this fictional K-pop band that we have”.
Sarandos also recognised the audio streaming impact of Golden and Soda Pop – “enormous hits and they all came from a film that's available only on Netflix”, he said.
