K-pop group NewJeans are to go on hiatus following a court ruling against them in their label dispute.
The Korean five-piece had attempted to rebrand as NJZ. But during a show at ComplexCon Hong Kong (March 23) – their first public appearance since the hearing – the BBC reported that NewJeans announced that "this will be our last performance for a little while”.
The court ruling on Friday (March 21) prevented the group from making music, organising their own appearances, or signing advertising/brand deals amid their dispute with label Ador.
NewJeans have been in a dispute with their record label since August 2024. Ador is part of HYBE.
In a press conference in November, the group had announced their departure from the company.
However, last week the Seoul court ruled that NewJeans' claims did not "sufficiently prove that Ador violated their significant duty as part of their contract".
Under the terms of the ruling, the group could face penalties for breach of contract if they attempted to change their name to NJZ.
