AWAL Middle East has launched with the signing of multi-platinum Egyptian artist Wegz and Raad Records.
“Headquartered in Dubai in partnership with Sony Music Middle East, AWAL enters the region with its commitment to empowering independent artists globally, providing a comprehensive range of services all while artists retain ownership of their masters,” said a statement.
Sony Music Middle East A&R director, Issa Outa, will head up AWAL Middle East. Issa has held senior roles, including managing partner & VP business development at Chabka, as well as launching Anghami Productions as VP music and as GM of Vibe Records.
With the new joint role, Outa will continue to report to Rami Mohsen, managing director of Sony Music Middle East with an added reporting line to Ben Akinbola, AWAL’s head of growth to define and execute AWAL’s strategy in the Middle East.
Wegz’s signing coincides with his 12-song album last week. The album features international talent such as French artist Tayc, and a local collaboration with Egyptian rapper Ziad Zaza.
Raad Records was co-founded by Wegz, along with Asem Tag (CEO) and Malik Tag (MD). It aims to explore the diversity of Arabic music and push it onto the global stage.
Wegz said: “I found an outlet where I can be creative beyond my own music, by working with a new wave of younger artists eager to find their identity and footing in an industry that can be unwelcoming and even hostile at times. We are excited to launch this chapter with the support of AWAL, who share much of our vision and values and have made bringing this to life an exciting and smooth process.”
Ben Akinbola said: “We couldn’t be more excited to break ground in the Middle East in partnership with Rami, Issa, and the Sony Music team. Middle Eastern culture is undeniably diverse and rich, brimming with a generation of powerful storytellers that have fueled sustained growth in the MENA music market.
“Together with Sony Music, AWAL is establishing a home for independent artists that is built on trust, transparency, and full alignment as partners. Kicking off our venture with Wegz and Raad Records, a visionary artist and uncompromising team, is a powerful statement of what's to come.”
