Spotify's Loud & Clear report reveals UK artists generated £810 million in royalties in 2024

Spotify’s latest numbers from its Loud & Clear report reveal that UK artists generated £810 million in royalties in 2024

That figure – up from around £750m in 2023 – represents the total royalties for rights-holders in the UK, which includes the shares for artists, songwriters, artists and labels.

The UK-specific streaming royalties data is part of Spotify’s initiative to demystify how artists earn money through streaming, clarify royalty distribution and highlight the growing and evolving global music landscape.

The number of UK artists who generated at least £10,000, £50,000 and £100,000 in royalties from Spotify alone has more than doubled since 2017. The number of UK artists who generated more than £1 million in 2024 has grown 20% since 2023.

In total, there were over 271 billion global plays of UK artists in 2024.

However, there was a striking absence of UK stars in Spotify’s Wrapped rundown at the end of 2024.

“Spotify remains the only streaming service that publishes this level of data about how much artists are generating each year and we’re pleased to share a closer look at how UK artists are performing and earning on platform,” said a statement.

Earlier this year, Spotify’s global data revealed that it was the highest paying music retailer globally, paying the industry more than $10 billion in 2024. Independent artists and labels collectively generated more than $5 billion, half of the total royalties for the year.

The streaming giant said that it showed Spotify’s “commitment to creating more opportunities for artists to build sustainable careers in music”.

The Loud & Clear site contains information on the payouts, the process and FAQs.

Spotify also pointed to the success of UK artists both domestically and internationally:

– Over three-quarters of all royalties generated by UK artists on Spotify in 2024 were from listeners outside of the UK.

– Spotify reported a 28% year-on-year increase in streams of UK artists coming from outside the UK.

– In the last 10 years, Spotify has seen a 1,000%-plus increase in streams of UK artists coming from outside of the UK.

– UK artists feature in over 3.5 billion playlists globally.

– Women UK artists have increasingly found success on Spotify, with a 52% increase in streams in the UK and an 82% increase in streams outside of the UK over the last five years.
