Spotify hires Julian Parker from Stability AI for artist-first AI team

Spotify

Spotify has tapped Julian Parker – formerly a research scientist at independent multi-modal generative AI company Stability AI – to work on the streaming giant's artist-first AI initiative.

News of Parker's appointment comes days after Spotify and Universal Music Group (UMG) unveiled landmark recorded music and publishing licensing agreements on AI features for fans.

The deals will enable Spotify to launch a new tool allowing fans to create covers and remixes of their favourite songs from participating artists and songwriters. The streaming giant announced plans for the AI features with labels last year

I'm super excited to work with such a phenomenal team

Announcing his hiring as Spotify staff research scientist on LinkedIn, Parker said he had joined Spotify's artist-first AI team alongside senior research manager Sebastian Ewert, research engineering lead Peter Sobot and senior research scientist Rachel Bittner "and many many other fantastic researchers and engineers".

"I recently joined Spotify to support their artist-first AI initiative," said Parker. "I'm super excited to work with such a phenomenal team.

"It's been a wonderful two and a bit years at Stability AI, and I'm super proud of the models we've released together... What a run! I'll still be rooting for the team of course, and I have zero doubt that they're going to continue doing even greater things."

UMG announced a strategic alliance with Stability AI last October to facilitate the development of next-generation professional music creation tools, powered by responsibly trained generative AI and built to support the creative process of artists, producers and songwriters globally.

Through this alliance, Stability AI’s research and product teams will work closely with UMG and its artists to research technical approaches for the next generation of music creation tools. They will explore new recording and composition concepts, gather insights into artists’ needs, and better understand how artists adopt and engage with these technologies.

It followed a deal revealed just hours earlier with AI-powered music creation platform Udio.

Meanwhile, Spotify's earnings results for Q1 2026, released last month, were in line with or ahead of expectations across all key metrics. Monthly active users (MAU) surpassed 760 million (up 12% year-on-year), while Spotify achieved its second-highest gross margin to date (33%).

Premium subscribers grew 9% year-on-year to 293m in Q1. Spotify is now forecasting it will reach 299m subscribers in the second quarter.

Total revenue increased 14% year-on-year at constant currency to €4.5 billion. Operating Income reached €715m.
